Confirm It Is a Scan

Try selecting a word in the PDF. If you can only select a whole page or no text at all, the document is probably a scan.

Scanned PDFs need OCR because the text exists as pixels, not as characters.

Prepare the File

Use the clearest version of the scan. Straighten rotated pages, avoid photos with shadows, and prefer documents with at least moderate resolution.

If possible, split mixed documents so scanned pages and normal digital pages can be reviewed separately after conversion.

Convert and Review

Open PDF to Word, convert the scanned PDF, then check names, dates, numbers, totals, addresses, and any table cells.

OCR can be very useful, but it should not be treated as perfect for contracts, invoices, financial records, or legal documents.
